Purpose of the site

This blog will detail 1,000 video hikes in Southern California. By Southern California, I am drawing a line from San Luis Obispo to the Nevada Border. Anything south of that line will be declared "Southern California". In a way, it is a personal challenge to do so many hikes. Mainly, however, it is my way of showcasing how many hiking opportunities there really are right in our own geographic back yard. As a blog, it serves as a companion piece to my Youtube channel "Mike On The Trail". It is also a work in progress, as I don't actually have 1,000 edited videos completed. This will take effort for quite some time before it is declared done. Even then, there will still be more out there. Here's to hiking and all the positive effects it has had on my life...and possibly yours!

Summary
With no known information about the Murrieta Hogbacks online, I sought to find my own way to them.  While researching Google Maps, I found the La Alba Trail.  I was hoping to use it as a starting point for reaching them.  Unfortunately, while in the canyon, it required an untrailed stream crossing (and probably the use of a chain saw) in order to continue.  Instead, I formed a loop hike back to the start in order to try again at some other point.
Untrailed open space from the creek to the Hogbacks.
Little did I know, I completed a short loop hike on the La Alba Trail.  This is an established trail that appears in the Alltrails app.  Although my route was not as long as the one on Alltrails, I would argue that the route I chose was probably better and more concise than the other.  If not looking to also conquer the Murrieta Hogbacks, this is a really easy hike.  If not for some small elevation gain, this would be rated as "Very Easy".  At the very least, this is a nice local leg stretcher, great for walking off a heavy Thanksgiving meal while visiting the family (imagining somebody having a gathering nearby).
Hanging out under the oaks.
This is also the first hike on my list that did not involve climbing a peak.  Meanwhile, the hike helped me to realize that there is a better starting point for the Murrieta Hogbacks a little further down the road.
