This blog will detail 1,000 video hikes in Southern California. By Southern California, I am drawing a line from San Luis Obispo to the Nevada Border. Anything south of that line will be declared "Southern California". In a way, it is a personal challenge to do so many hikes. Mainly, however, it is my way of showcasing how many hiking opportunities there really are right in our own geographic back yard. As a blog, it serves as a companion piece to my Youtube channel "Mike On The Trail". It is also a work in progress, as I don't actually have 1,000 edited videos completed. This will take effort for quite some time before it is declared done. Even then, there will still be more out there. Here's to hiking and all the positive effects it has had on my life...and possibly yours!
I began the hike from Anaheim Hills Elementary School off Serrano Avenue. A trail leads past the school and into the hills. Robbers Roost is reachable almost right away, so I made sure to make a quick visit. Beyond Robbers Roost, all of Santiago Oaks Regional Park and Weir Canyon spill out into the canyons below. My goal on this hike was to hit a number of the high points along the ridge and to form a loop back to my starting point.
Approaching Barham-Deer Peak.
The next peak down the ridge was Barham-Deer Peak, which was named after the two trails that intersected there. The trails starts descending from there down to lower peaks before hitting the floor of the canyon. Peaks visited included Lookout Peak and Rock-Succulent Peak. Once hitting the canyon floor, I followed flat dirt roads and use trails while bending right to begin forming the looping portion of my hike.
Dropping into the canyon.
While passing a dam and the main portion of Santiago Oaks Regional Park, the trail began rising back into the hills. It actually felt kind of good to be climbing once again. The hike climbed to Grasshopper Mountain before eventually leveling off by the time I reached the trail leading up from the school. I celebrated the loops completion by walking downhill back to the parking lot. I customized my own loop hike on this one. It can be done differently the next time out, if desired.
