Purpose of the site

This blog will detail 1,000 video hikes in Southern California. By Southern California, I am drawing a line from San Luis Obispo to the Nevada Border. Anything south of that line will be declared "Southern California". In a way, it is a personal challenge to do so many hikes. Mainly, however, it is my way of showcasing how many hiking opportunities there really are right in our own geographic back yard. As a blog, it serves as a companion piece to my Youtube channel "Mike On The Trail". It is also a work in progress, as I don't actually have 1,000 edited videos completed. This will take effort for quite some time before it is declared done. Even then, there will still be more out there. Here's to hiking and all the positive effects it has had on my life...and possibly yours!

Summary
Unlike the vast majority of my hiking outings, some places I simply can't avoid paying entrance fees.  Here is one of the exceptions. It probably is possible to park in the neighborhood somewhere outside of the park, but that would probably add at least a mile to the hike, if not more.  This is a big park, so I felt much better getting a good spot somewhere inside of it, rather from far outside of it.
Hitting the open spaces north of the park.
Once in the park, I parked in a central location, somewhat near to the hiking route I used to form a loop of the park.  When on foot, I continued on the park roads toward the northern edge of the park.  Beyond the watered grassy areas, unkept open spaces in the hills had dirt trails passing along the park perimeter.
Ample seasonal blooms on my visit.
I picked up one of these trails and continued the loop.  It passed in and out of the park before bending south and toward the high hills on the southern edge of the park.  Once in the hills, I left the road and picked up a dirt trail leading to the high point in the area.
Overlooking the park.
Although it isn't very high via elevation, it provides a great view over Irvine Regional Park and the surrounding open spaces.  It was a quick drop from there back to the parking areas within the park, where I closed out the loop hike.
Bright booms near the end of the loop.
