This blog will detail 1,000 video hikes in Southern California. By Southern California, I am drawing a line from San Luis Obispo to the Nevada Border. Anything south of that line will be declared "Southern California". In a way, it is a personal challenge to do so many hikes. Mainly, however, it is my way of showcasing how many hiking opportunities there really are right in our own geographic back yard. As a blog, it serves as a companion piece to my Youtube channel "Mike On The Trail". It is also a work in progress, as I don't actually have 1,000 edited videos completed. This will take effort for quite some time before it is declared done. Even then, there will still be more out there. Here's to hiking and all the positive effects it has had on my life...and possibly yours!
The Colby Trail, not to be confused with Colby Canyon, is one of two similarly named trails in the San Gabriel Mountains. The Colby Trail begins in a Glendora neighborhood in the San Gabriel Valley. I placed this hike in the San Gabriel Mountains category, however, since it climbs into the Angeles National Forest for most of the hike.
Heading into the San Gabriel Mountains.
The hike climbs up the front range and intersects Glendora Mountain Road at a few spots. It continues to climb to Peak 2583 adjacent to Glendora Ridge, which is the route that leads to Azusa Peak. Worlds collide when you realize you made it all the way up there from a SGV neighborhood.
Passing through an oak grove.
Peak 2583 (otherwise known as Summit of Colby) has a foundation on the summit, but no clue as to what it used to be. There are good views from there, so it may have been a fire lookout at one time. I could have explored further up, but I had already visited when I did the Azusa Peak hike.

Therefore, this became my turn around point. It is downhill all the way back to Glendora, where views are better appreciated while going downhill. Other intersecting trails provide extended hiking opportunities in the area, but I stuck with the out and back while completing it.
