Purpose of the site

This blog will detail 1,000 video hikes in Southern California. By Southern California, I am drawing a line from San Luis Obispo to the Nevada Border. Anything south of that line will be declared "Southern California". In a way, it is a personal challenge to do so many hikes. Mainly, however, it is my way of showcasing how many hiking opportunities there really are right in our own geographic back yard. As a blog, it serves as a companion piece to my Youtube channel "Mike On The Trail". It is also a work in progress, as I don't actually have 1,000 edited videos completed. This will take effort for quite some time before it is declared done. Even then, there will still be more out there. Here's to hiking and all the positive effects it has had on my life...and possibly yours!

Summary
The Potato Mountain hike begins right at the edge of the Angeles National Forest.  It starts in a shady oak grove on a wide dirt road (known as Palmer Evey Motorway).  After the initial shaded bliss, the trail begins rising steeply toward a saddle below Potato Mountain.  Continuing straight from there leads toward the Claremont Hills Loop.  To climb the mountain, a left turn at the saddle continues the climb to the summit.
Approaching Potato Mountain.

There is no shade on the way up the mountain.  It eventually crests with great views over the Inland Empire and San Gabriel Valley.  On the summit sits a building foundation.  Situated on the foundation are usually many decorated potatoes that past visitors decided to add to the collection.  After all, this is "Potato" Mountain!

This is a popular hike, so there are usually many visitors that hang around on the summit.  There is a use trail that leads straight down toward the starting point, but I never used it before.  Instead, I returned the way I came along the road.
