This blog will detail 1,000 video hikes in Southern California. By Southern California, I am drawing a line from San Luis Obispo to the Nevada Border. Anything south of that line will be declared "Southern California". In a way, it is a personal challenge to do so many hikes. Mainly, however, it is my way of showcasing how many hiking opportunities there really are right in our own geographic back yard. As a blog, it serves as a companion piece to my Youtube channel "Mike On The Trail". It is also a work in progress, as I don't actually have 1,000 edited videos completed. This will take effort for quite some time before it is declared done. Even then, there will still be more out there. Here's to hiking and all the positive effects it has had on my life...and possibly yours!
Angeles Crest Highway passes close to many popular peaks along the crest of the San Gabriel Range. Although Bare Mountain is nearby, it is a bit to the north of the highway. A short drive on Santa Clara Divide Road & Pacifico Mountain Road took me to the start of the hike. From a locked vehicle gate, the hike begins on a dirt road. It eventually leads toward the canyon drainage, but picks up the summit trail along the way. The trail elevates to a few false summits before ending at the mostly barren summit.
Hiking the burned slopes toward Bare Mountain.
Good views of the northern front range peaks from the top. Views of the crest of the range are visible for miles. I soaked it all in as I paused on the summit before descending.
On the summit.
Not many trees along the route, especially since it passes through a recent burn zone. I returned along the same route. The hike is short enough to pick up another hike down the road without overextending oneself. That is exactly what I did, as I did my second hike of the day at Delight & Double Delight Peaks.
