Purpose of the site

This blog will detail 1,000 video hikes in Southern California. By Southern California, I am drawing a line from San Luis Obispo to the Nevada Border. Anything south of that line will be declared "Southern California". In a way, it is a personal challenge to do so many hikes. Mainly, however, it is my way of showcasing how many hiking opportunities there really are right in our own geographic back yard. As a blog, it serves as a companion piece to my Youtube channel "Mike On The Trail". It is also a work in progress, as I don't actually have 1,000 edited videos completed. This will take effort for quite some time before it is declared done. Even then, there will still be more out there. Here's to hiking and all the positive effects it has had on my life...and possibly yours!

Summary
By looking at the numbers, this really seems to be not much of a hike.  However, this is a climb up a prominent point within the city of Riverside.  Therefore, hikers can ignore this hike "at their own risk".  Also, since it is a short outing, I made sure to plan other nearby hikes to round out the day.
Arriving at the cistern.
Street parking is on Panorama Road, so the hike begins by walking down the sidewalk.  After passing the last house on the street, I cut across the open field below the Pachappa Hill in order to find the route of least resistance.  There is no established trail, but finding the way up comes down to minor route finding instincts.  It rises to a cistern about three quarters of the way up.  Pressing forward a little more leads to the summit.
On the summit.
On top, there are grand views of the city of Riverside in a 360 degree panorama.  I hung around an extra few minutes just to appreciate the view.  I then came back down the same way without seeing anybody else up there, other than a neighborhood barking dog constantly heard in the background the whole time.  Urban hikes can be exciting and worthwhile at times!
