Purpose of the site

This blog will detail 1,000 video hikes in Southern California. By Southern California, I am drawing a line from San Luis Obispo to the Nevada Border. Anything south of that line will be declared "Southern California". In a way, it is a personal challenge to do so many hikes. Mainly, however, it is my way of showcasing how many hiking opportunities there really are right in our own geographic back yard. As a blog, it serves as a companion piece to my Youtube channel "Mike On The Trail". It is also a work in progress, as I don't actually have 1,000 edited videos completed. This will take effort for quite some time before it is declared done. Even then, there will still be more out there. Here's to hiking and all the positive effects it has had on my life...and possibly yours!

Summary
Good things happen when living near a hiking area. Chino Hills is loaded with hiking opportunities which makes it a great place to go when I don't feel like driving. Even if I don't feel like hiking far, this one also fits the bill, since it is only a few miles in length,  I started the hike from Chino Hills Community Park, mostly because that is a good place to park.  A loop gets formed by passing along the edge of the park, the ranch styled neighborhood, and on hiking easements.

The loop preserves the area's ranch lands.
By going clockwise, the the high point of the hike gets visited quickly, which is Gordon Benchmark.  If you look closely at the Benchmark, it indeed has "Gordon" chiseled into it.  Although it is an easy climb, there are great neighborhood views from the summit.  From there, the trail drops to the northwest and picks up a scenic hiking easement that skirts several homes.  The easement ends at English Road, where a right turn has the loop bending back to the east.

Distant view of Gordon Benchmark.
English Road features many ranch properties which seem to be a link to the past when there was much more open space in Chino Hills.  The road eventually connects with an easement that leads back into Chino Hills Community Park.  I walked the outer edge of the park before taking a roadside horse trail back to the parking lot, thus completing an efficient loop.
